Selon la tradition, c'est à Iria Flavia que l'apôtre Saint Jacques a prédiqué pour la première fois lors de son séjour en Hispania. Peu après sa mort, ses disciples Théodore et Athanase ont amené sa tête et son corps à Iria depuis Jérusalem dans un bateau en pierre. Ils ont amarré le bateau à un pedrón (mot galicien pour grosse pierre), d'où le nouveau toponyme donné à l'endroit. Les deux disciples sont restés à Iria Flavia (aujourd'hui Padrón) pour prêcher après avoir enterré l'apôtre à Compostelle, et le légendaire pedrón peut être vu aujourd'hui à l'église paroissiale de Santiago de Padrón.
