Pladsen har kun været kendt som Place Vendôme siden det 17. århundrede, opkaldt efter det Hotel Vendôme, der ligger ved pladsen. Før det hed det Place Louis le Grand, og ved sin opståen Place des Conquêtes. Under den franske revolution blev pladsen omdøbt til Place des Piques, og under Paris Commune hed den Place Internationale.
