Byen ligger på en tidligere ø i Loire ved samløbet med Aron-floden. Den højre kanal af Loire blev dæmmet op for at genvinde land og er nu tilbage som en arm, der strækker sig op ad til byens centrum. Loire er på dette punkt et vigtigt navigationspunkt, da det danner krydsningen mellem Canal du Nivernais og Canal latéral à la Loire, som begge ligger inden for byens grænser.
