Montbenoît er en kommune i Doubs-afdelingen i Bourgogne-Franche-Comté-regionen i det østlige Frankrig.
I begyndelsen af det 12. århundrede gav Landry, herre af Joux, jord i den øvre Doubs-dal til Humbert, ærkebiskop af Besançon, for at grundlægge et kloster. Den lokale top i området blev på det tidspunkt kaldt Mont Benoît efter en religiøs eremit ved navn Benoît, der boede der. Humbert inviterede munke til at komme fra Valais, og et kloster under St. Columbanus' regel blev bygget af en munk ved navn Nardouin i 1141-1142. Byen voksede op nær klosteret. Både klosteret og byen blev kaldt Montbenoît efter den lokale top. Klosteret kom senere under Augustinernes regel.
