Haven havde uregelmæssige bagsider af huse, der så ud over de omkringliggende gader. De fleste af disse huse var butikker. I en af disse butikker købte Charlotte Corday den kniv, som hun stak Jean-Paul Marat med, en vigtig begivenhed i den franske revolution. Den blev også berømt gennem malerier af David og Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry.
Under den franske revolutionære periode blev haverne ved Palais-Royal åbnet for alle parisere. Derfor blev palæet kaldt Palais de l'Égalité.
