'Han (Pave Urban II) rejste til Clermont for at bede i krypten under Basilikaen Notre-Dame-du-Port, og lancerede dagen efter den hellige krig i sin berømte opfordring til det første korstog, et sted på markerne tæt på byen, den 27. november 1095.' Han skulle have afsluttet sin tale med de bitre ord: "Deus lo Volt! (Gud vil det!)". Denne udtalelse blev dermed kampkaldet for korsfarerne.
