Wist je dat de Basiliek Notre-Dame-du-Port aan de basis ligt van de eerste kruistocht. De verschikkelijke effecten van die kruistocht worden schitterend beschreven in het boek van Stefan Hertmans, De Bekeerlinge. 'Hij (Paus Urbanus II) begaf zich naar Clermont om er te bidden in de crypte vam de Basiliek van de Notre-Dame-du-Port, en lanceerde daags nadien de heilige oorlog in zijn befaamde oproep tot de eerste kruistocht, ergens in de velden vlak bij de stad, op 27 november 1095.' Hij zou zijn rede hebben besloten met de wrange woorden: "Deus lo Volt! (God wil het!)". Deze uitspraak werd daarmee de strijdkreet van de kruisvaarders.
