Oprettet i det 3. århundrede, er det et historisk bispedømme i Provence. Det tilhører provinsen Marseille.
Bispedømmet antages at være blevet oprettet i det 3. århundrede. Det svarer til de administrative grænser for departementet Alpes-Maritimes, bortset fra Lérins-øerne, som hører under Fréjus; hvad angår sognene La Brigue, Libre, Piène og Tende, tilhører de stadig bispedømmet Ventimiglia, selvom de administreres af Nice siden 1947.
