Glastonbury er et vigtigt helligt sted og pilgrimsmål både for kristne og for tilhængere af naturreligioner. Ifølge overleveringen skulle dette være stedet, hvor det keltiske kristendom opstod, efter at Josef fra Arimathea havde bosat sig her. Der er også lokale henvisninger til den hellige gral og legenden om kong Arthur. Glastonbury har muligvis været beboet i forhistorisk tid.
