Nelsons Søjle er rejst til den store helt Admiral Horatio Nelson. Han blev skudt på kvartdækket af skibet Victory under slaget ved Trafalgar. En musketskud ramte Nelson i venstre skulder og gik gennem hans rygsøjle ved den sjette og syvende thorakale hvirvel. Nelson udbrød: "De lykkedes endelig, jeg er død."
Nogle kilder angiver, at hans lig blev placeret i et tønde med brandy for at bevare det på den lange rejse hjem. Og at besætningen ikke havde noget imod, at hans krop boblede væk i brandyen for at få en tår af væsken omkring ham.
