La colonne de Nelson est érigée en l'honneur du grand héros l'amiral Horatio Nelson. Il a été abattu sur le gaillard d'avant du navire Victory lors de la bataille de Trafalgar. Une balle de mousquet a frappé Nelson à l'épaule gauche et a traversé sa colonne vertébrale au niveau des sixième et septième vertèbres thoraciques. Nelson s'est exclamé : "Ils ont enfin réussi, je suis mort."
Certaines sources indiquent que son cadavre a été placé dans un tonneau de brandy pour le préserver lors du long voyage de retour. Et que l'équipage se moquait que son corps se dissolve dans le brandy pour en goûter un peu autour de lui.
