Slottet Karneid, som ligger lidt øst for Bozen, er bygget på en stejl klippeskråning, der fra to sider synes uindtagelig, og ligger cirka 420 meter over havets overflade ved indgangen til Eisack- og Eggendalene. Ifølge en gammel overlevering skulle det oprindeligt have tilhørt herrerne af Greifenstein, som i 1289 også ejede det nærliggende Haselburg. Slottet, som blev bygget i midten af det 13. århundrede og i 1297 blev nævnt som „castrum de Curniet“ eller „gschloss Curneidt“, nævnes dokumentarisk i 1370 som ejendom af herrerne af Völs, der udvidede deres indflydelsessfære fra Prösels via Steinegg til Bozen. I 1387 blev herrerne af Lichtenstein betroet slottene og domstolene i Karneid og Steinegg. De senere grever af Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn formåede at bevare denne ejendom indtil deres uddøen i 1764.
