Broen forbinder højre bred af Nieuwe Maas med Nordøen. Den nuværende bro er den anden Willemsbro. Den første blev designet af C.B. van der Tak, blev åbnet i 1878 og opkaldt efter kong Willem III. Den anden bro er designet af Cor Veerling og blev færdiggjort i 1981. Mange af beregningerne for den nye Willemsbro blev lavet af chefingeniør G.C. Berwald.
