El puente conecta la ribera derecha del Nieuwe Maas con la isla del Norte. El puente actual es el segundo Willemsbrug. El primero fue diseñado por C.B. van der Tak, se inauguró en 1878 y fue nombrado en honor al rey Guillermo III. El segundo puente fue diseñado por Cor Veerling y se completó en 1981. Muchos de los cálculos para el nuevo Willemsbrug fueron realizados por el ingeniero jefe G.C. Berwald.
