Willem Janszoon Blaeu, den berømte kortlægger, blev født i 1571 nær Alkmaar. Han var søn af en velstående sildesælger. Hans fremtid skulle også være inden for sildesalget. Han rejser til Amsterdam for at etablere en sildhandel der. Men det bliver en skuffelse. Han drager til Danmark, hvor han bliver assistent for den store astronom Tycho Brahe.
