Hvad er forbindelsen mellem den første ubåd, sprængstoffer, Alkmaar og Norfolk? Den forbindelse er hollænderen Cornelis Jacobszoon Drebbel, født i Alkmaar i 1572. Han er gået ind i historien som opfinderen af ubåden. Han demonstrerede sin opfindelse på floden Themsen, på ruten Westminster-Greenwich i London for kong James I. Men flåden så ikke nogen praktiske anvendelser af hans opfindelse... Drebbel var også en sprængstofexpert og tilbød sine tjenester under belejringen af La Rochelle i 1627 mod franskmændene. Som en god hollandsk ingeniør var Cornelis Drebbel også ekspert i dræning. Han hjalp med dræningen af store områder omkring Norfolk og Suffolk i England.
