Haarlem blev allerede nævnt som sted i et dokument i det 10. århundrede. Navnet var dengang 'Haralem'. Det er en sammensætning af ordene 'haru' (sandjord eller sandryg), 'lo' (skov) og 'haima' (hjem, eller bosætning). Haarlem betyder altså bogstaveligt talt en bosætning på en sandryg i nærheden af skoven.
