Den 14. maj 1940 blev det 3. største tyske bybombardement fra Luftwaffe foretaget i Rotterdam. Guernica i Spanien og Warszawa i Polen havde allerede fundet sted tidligere. Det overordnede flertal af byens centrum blev lagt i ruiner, og 900 mennesker blev dræbt. Den hollandske general Henri Winkelman overgav sig efter 5 dage.
