Det ligger vest for Heerenveen, på vejen mellem Joure og Sint Nicolaasga. I 2021 havde landsbyen 805 indbyggere. Under landsbyen hører også et lille stykke af bydelen Heide. Landsbyen opstod i det 19. århundrede omkring en bro over Scharsterrijn: en kanal der løber fra Tjeukemeer til Langweerderwielen. Ved skarren blev landsbyen bygget. I lang tid blev Scharsterbrug også kaldt De Scharren.
