Si trova a ovest di Heerenveen, lungo la strada tra Joure e Sint Nicolaasga. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 805 abitanti. Parte del villaggio include anche un piccolo pezzo della frazione Heide. Il villaggio è nato nel XIX secolo attorno a un ponte sullo Scharsterrijn: un canale che va dal Tjeukemeer ai Langweerderwielen. Il villaggio è stato costruito all'altezza delle scarpate. A lungo Scharsterbrug è stato chiamato anche De Scharren.
