Det ligger sydvest for Dokkum og nordvest for Damwoude. Det er den mest vestlige by i Dokkumer Wouden og kaldes også lokalt De Geast. I 2021 havde Rinsumageest 1.125 indbyggere. Landsbyen ligger på grænsen mellem de frisiske skove, Buitenveld og lerområdet. I landsbyen udspringer Murk. Siden 2009 er det frisiske navn for landsbyen det officielle. Hvor der tidligere på sted- og gadeplansskilt blev nævnt både de frisiske og hollandske navne, nævnes kun det officielle frisiske navn siden da.
