Está al suroeste de Dokkum y al noroeste de Damwoude. Es la aldea más occidental de los Dokkumer Wouden y también se la conoce localmente como De Geast. En 2021, Rinsumageest tenía 1.125 habitantes. El pueblo se encuentra en la frontera entre los Wouden frisones, el Buitenveld y la región de arcilla. En el pueblo nace el Murk. Desde 2009, el nombre frisón del pueblo es el oficial. Donde anteriormente en los letreros de lugares y calles se mencionaban tanto los nombres frisones como los nombres neerlandeses, desde entonces solo se menciona el nombre frisón oficial.
