Oosterhesselen var indtil 1. januar 1998 hovedbyen i den ligeledes navngivne selvstændige kommune, som også omfattede landsbyerne Gees, Zwinderen, Geesbrug og størstedelen af Nieuwlande. Oosterhesselen er oprindeligt en eslandsby, som især fra 1960'erne er blevet udvidet med nye boligområder. I den gamle del af landsbyen kan man dog stadig finde flere karakteristiske saksiske gårde.
