Oosterhesselen fue hasta el 1 de enero de 1998 la localidad principal del municipio independiente del mismo nombre, que también incluía los pueblos de Gees, Zwinderen, Geesbrug y la mayor parte de Nieuwlande. Oosterhesselen es originariamente una aldea de es, que se ha ampliado especialmente desde la década de 1960 con nuevos barrios. Sin embargo, en la parte antigua del pueblo aún se pueden encontrar varias granjas saksas características.
