Sneek ligger i nordøst for IJlst, nordvest for Joure og Heerenveen, sydvest for Leeuwarden og sydøst for Bolsward. Det er den største by i kommunen Súdwest-Fryslân og den tredje by i provinsen Friesland. Byen havde 33.590 indbyggere i 2021. Sneek ligger ved Sneekermeer og er kendt for sin historiske bymidte, herunder Waterpoort, og for Sneekweek. Byen spiller en central rolle for regionen Sydvesthjørnet og var fra august 1498 til marts 1500 den officielle hovedstad i amtet Friesland.
