Det ligger nordøst for Ternaard og nordvest for Oosternijkerk og Nes. Bycentrum ligger op ad Waddenhavets dæmning, som løber i en bue rundt om landsbyen. Landsbyen er forbundet til Paesens via Wierumer Opvaart. Langs dæmningen løber også Dijkvaart. Landsbyen Wierum fungerer som udgangspunkt for vandreture til Engelsmanplaat. I 2021 havde landsbyen 315 indbyggere. Under landsbyen hører også en del af byskabet 't Schoor, ved den tidligere byskab Koterhuizen.
