Se encuentra al noreste de Ternaard y al noroeste de Oosternijkerk y Nes. El núcleo del pueblo está junto a la duna del Mar de Wadden, que da la vuelta al pueblo. El pueblo está conectado a Paesens a través del Wierumer Opvaart. A lo largo de la duna también discurre la Dijkvaart. El pueblo de Wierum actúa como punto de partida para excursiones de caminata por el barro hacia la Engelsmanplaat. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 315 habitantes. También forma parte del pueblo una porción de la aldea 't Schoor, cerca de la antigua aldea Koterhuizen.
