Rijs ligger sydøst for Stavoren og Bakhuizen, langs vejen Oudemirdum - Hemelum. Landsbyen ligger på den nordøstlige side af Rijsterbos tæt på IJsselmeer. Der samarbejdes med de nærliggende steder Bakhuizen og Mirns, så der er en fælles forening for byens interesser "Bakhuizen, Mirns og Rijs". I 2021 havde landsbyen Rijs 175 indbyggere.
