Rijs ligt ten zuidoosten van Stavoren en Bakhuizen, aan de weg Oudemirdum - Hemelum. Het dorp ligt aan de noordoostkant van het Rijsterbos vlak bij het IJsselmeer. Met de nabijgelegen plaatsen Bakhuizen en Mirns wordt samengewerkt, zo is er een gezamenlijke vereniging dorpsbelang "Bakhuizen, Mirns en Rijs". In 2021 telde het dorp Rijs 175 inwoners.
