I en skarp indre kurve af Schelde, fire kilometer nord for Antwerpens indre by, ligger Fort Sint-Filips. Alexander Farnese, hertugen af Parma, byggede det i 1584 sammen med Fort Sint-Marie under belejringen af Antwerpen. Med disse to 'modfæstninger' ønskede han at afskære byen fra de statslige fæstninger Lillo og Liefkenshoek. Mellem de to fæstninger byggede han også sin imponerende bådbro. Efter Antwerpen faldet forblev Fort Sint-Filips af stor militær betydning for at modvirke Lillo og Liefkenshoek.
