En una aguda curva interna del Escalda, a cuatro kilómetros al norte del centro de Amberes, se encuentra el Fuerte Sint-Filips. Alexander Farnese, el duque de Parma, lo construyó en 1584 junto con el Fuerte Sint-Marie durante el asedio de Amberes. Con esos dos "fortines" quería cortar a la ciudad de los fuertes Estatales de Lillo y Liefkenshoek. Entre ambos fuertes también construyó su impresionante puente de barcos. Tras la caída de Amberes, el Fuerte Sint-Filips mantuvo una gran importancia militar, para contrarrestar a Lillo y Liefkenshoek.
