De Groote Heide var indtil ca. 1900 et stort hedeområde, der strakte sig mellem Heeze, Geldrop, Eindhoven, Valkenswaard og Achelse Kluis. Området var omkring 5000 hektar stort og blev afgrænset af Tongelreep og Strijper Aa. I området var der nogle små opdyrkninger, de såkaldte kampjes, isolerede, omgivet af træskud. Ruinerne heraf findes i den nordøstlige del af det senere opståede Leenderbos. Heden blev også brugt til falkefangst, en vigtig indkomstkilde for beboerne i Valkenswaard og omegn. Til dette formål var der indrettet fangstpladser med en såkaldt tobhut.
