The Groote Heide was until around 1900 a large heathland area that stretched between Heeze, Geldrop, Eindhoven, Valkenswaard, and the Achelse Kluis. The area was about 5000 hectares in size and was bordered by the Tongelreep and Strijper Aa. There were some small clearings in the area, the so-called kampjes, isolated fields surrounded by hedges. Remnants of these can be found in the northeast of the later developed Leenderbos. The heath was also used for falconry, an important source of livelihood for the residents of Valkenswaard and its surroundings. For this purpose, trapping sites with a so-called tobhut were established.
