Blankeveen: havet af hvidt dun
Søer opstår i skålformede lavninger, hvor regnvand bliver stående. I jorden er der et uigennemtrængeligt lag, som gør, at vandet ikke kan sive væk. I vandet og langs kanten vokser planter, der trives i det næringsfattige regnvand, såsom kæruld, tranebær, soldug og sphagnum. Under den levende vegetation danner de døde rester et torvlag, og over tid kan en sø gradvist vokse helt igen. I denne sø, Blankeveen, vokser kærulden så massivt, at dunene i juni danner et bølgende hav af hvidt.
