Doornse Kei stammer fra Skandinavien. Under den næstsidste istid, da en gletsjerstræk nåede halvvejs ind i Nederland og formede Veluwe og Utrechtse Heuvelrug, fulgte der også løse sten med. De fleste udgravede løse sten er samlet som geologisk monument i Zanderij Maarn, men én sten er sluppet forbi og er placeret på en sokkel i Kaapse Bossen.
