Kapellet blev bygget til ære for den portugisiske sejr over den franske hær i 1809.
I 1809, under den anden franske invasion af Portugal, fandt der adskillige slag og sammenstød sted mellem portugisiske styrker og den franske hær. Slaget ved Duero og forsvaret af Amarante-broen er centrale øjeblikke, hvor de portugisiske væbnede styrker, ofte i samarbejde med briterne, formåede at modstå og afvise den franske invasion.
