The chapel was built in honor of the Portuguese victory over the French army in 1809.
In 1809, several battles and clashes took place between Portuguese forces and the French army during the Second French Invasion of Portugal . The Battle of the Douro and the defense of the Amarante Bridge are important moments in which the Portuguese forces, often in collaboration with the British, managed to resist and repel the French invasion.
