Die Gemeinde liegt im Gailtal im Süden Kärntens am Fuß der Villacher Alpe. Die Grenze im Süden bildet die Gail in einer Höhe von 540 Meter über dem Meer. Nach Norden steigt das Land auf bis zu 2166 Meter am Dobratsch an. Neben der Gail sind Nötschbach, Ememrsdorfer Bach und Defernigbach die größten Gewässer.
