Kapfenberg ist mit 22.138 Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt im österreichischen Bundesland Steiermark sowie größte Stadt im Gerichtsbezirk Bruck an der Mur und im politischen Bezirk Bruck-Mürzzuschlag. Die Stadt liegt zwischen Kindberg und Bruck an der Mur am Fluss Mürz im Mürztal. Im Rahmen der Gemeindestrukturreform in der Steiermark wurde Kapfenberg am 1. Jänner 2015 mit der vormals eigenständigen Gemeinde Parschlug vereinigt. Das Gebiet der Stadtgemeinde ist wesentlich vom Wald geprägt, der rund 66 % der Gemeindefläche ausmacht.
