Scharnstein ist eine Marktgemeinde in Oberösterreich im Bezirk Gmunden im Traunviertel mit 4958 Einwohnern .Die Ausdehnung beträgt von Nord nach Süd 9,1 km, von West nach Ost 10,5 km. Die Gesamtfläche beträgt 47,8 km². 54,8 % der Fläche sind bewaldet, 36 % der Fläche sind landwirtschaftlich genutzt.Höchste Erhebung des Gemeindegebiets ist das Steineck mit 1418 m. Weitere bekannte Berge sind der Zwillingskogel 1405 m, der Hochsalm 1405 m und das Maisenkögerl 945 m.
