Die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften ist eine Gelehrtengesellschaft und die größte Trägerin außeruniversitärer Grundlagenforschung in Österreich. Nach Vorbildern wie der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina und der Royal Society 1847 als Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien gegründet, ist sie heute eine mit einem jährlichen Basisbudget von rund 100 Mio. Euro ausgestattete, größtenteils staatlich finanzierte Einrichtung mit über 770 gewählten Mitgliedern, rund 1800 Mitarbeitern und 25 Forschungseinrichtungen in Wien, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck und Leoben.
