Er entspricht der Region Mittleres Innviertel. Er grenzt im Westen an den Bezirk Braunau, im Osten an die Bezirke Schärding und Grieskirchen, im Süden an den Bezirk Vöcklabruck, im Norden an den Freistaat Bayern.Der Bezirk wurde 1868 eingerichtet. Durch den neuen Bezirk Grieskirchen wurde 1911 der Gerichtsbezirkssprengel Haag am Hausruck abgegeben. 1923 fiel die Gemeinde Geiersberg vom Bezirk Grieskirchen an den Bezirk Ried zurück.
