Bei einem Brand in einem im Tunnel befindlichen Zug der Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 starben am 11. November 2000 155 Menschen. Es war die größte Katastrophe, die sich in Österreich seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ereignete. Im brennenden, bergauf fahrenden Zug kamen 150 der 162 Passagiere durch Rauchgasvergiftung zu Tode. Außerdem starben im entgegenkommenden Zug der Zugführer und ein Passagier sowie in der Bergstation drei Personen durch Rauchgasvergiftung.
