Wenig lässt darauf schließen, dass hier jemals ein Dorf war. Nur der Name des Baches (Roeselarekreek) gibt einen Hinweis auf die Vergangenheit. Hier lag Nieuw-Roeselare, gegründet im Jahr 1241. Aber es kam zu seinem Ende durch das steigende Wasser einer Sturmflut im Jahr 1374. Im 14. Jahrhundert erhielt das Dorf noch vor seinem Ende das Stadtrecht. Die fatale Sturmflut von 1374 war sicherlich nicht die einzige ihrer Art zu jener Zeit. Zwischen 1214 und 1530 wurden an der Nordsee mehr als 45 Sturmfluten verzeichnet.
