Le Grand-Hornu wurde zwischen 1810 und 1830 errichtet und vereint Bergwerksanlagen und Privatwohnungen von Betriebsleitern und Arbeitern.
Die Bergwerksgebäude liegen rund um einen ovalen Hof. Die Direktionsbüros sind mit den Lagern und den Werkstätten verbunden.
Im selben Zeitraum wurden 400 Arbeiterhäuser gebaut, jedes mit Wohnzimmer, Küche und drei Schlafzimmern im ersten Stock, einem Keller und einem kleinen Garten nach hinten hinaus.
Zur Siedlung gehörten auch eine Schule, ein Badehaus, ein Tanzsaal und eine Bibliothek.
Die ab 1971 restaurierte Anlage beherbergt das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst der
Französischen Gemeinschaft Belgiens (Musée des arts contemporains de la Communauté française de Belgique, MAC’s http://www.mac-s.be).
