In Zelzate und Umgebung ist sie bekannt als Mietje Stroel oder, laut offizieller Lesart: das Mädchen, das dort uriniert, wo es ihr passt. Zudem wurde die Geschichte erfunden, dass sie auf einer Mülldeponie ausgesetzt wurde und von einem Schmuggler aufgezogen wurde. Zu Ehren von Mietje wurde auch die Garde von Mietje Stroel gegründet,
