Es ist offensichtlich, dass die Stadt ihren Namen dem Herk verdankt, ursprünglich der Arca, einem Seitenfluss der Tamara (Demer). 1107 wird der Name als Harcke in einer päpstlichen Bulle geschrieben. Danach wurde meist von Wuest-Herck gesprochen. Unter Napoleon wurde der Name in Herck-la-Ville geändert, um Verwechslungen mit Sint-Lambrechts-Herk zu vermeiden.
