Von 1923 bis 1992 wurde in der Zeche Zolder Steinkohle gefördert. Hier wurde am 30. September 1992 die letzte Steinkohlenzeche der Benelux endgültig geschlossen. Der Zuzug vieler ausländischer Arbeitskräfte in die Zeche verlieh der Gemeinde in kurzer Zeit eine multikulturelle Bevölkerung.
Touristisch ist die Rennstrecke von Zolder das Hauptzugpferd der Gemeinde.
In der Gemeinde kann man einige Schlösser besichtigen, wie das Schloss Vogelsanck und das Schloss Meylandt.
Außerdem liegt das Vijvergebiet Midden-Limburg teilweise in der Gemeinde.
