Oignies wird in der Region immer noch 'das Dorf der Witwen' genannt. Hier wurde Schiefer abgebaut. Und das war harte und gefährliche Arbeit. Noch viel gefährlicher als die Arbeit in den Steinkohlegruben. Der Schieferstecher oder Arbeiter, der Schiefer abbaut, hatte durch den Steinstaub ein viel höheres Risiko für eine Lungenerkrankung. Die durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung des Schieferstechers lag vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bei etwa 55 Jahren. Und das war das niedrigste in diesem Dorf.
