Es wurde zwar schon oft behauptet, ist aber auch wirklich so: Der Friedhof Schoonselhof ist der Père Lachaise von Antwerpen. Genau wie auf dem noch berühmteren Pariser Friedhof findet man auch auf dem Schoonselhof, der sich über ein riesiges 84 ha großes Gebiet erstreckt, viele monumentale Grabstätten, prächtige Grünanlagen und die letzte Ruhestätte zahlreicher Berühmtheiten.
Der Schoonselhof gehörte ursprünglich zu einem Schloss, das auch heute noch vorhanden ist. Seit 1921 wird das ehemalige Schlossgelände als öffentlicher Friedhof genutzt, zu dem u. a. auch ein Soldatenfriedhof und ein jüdischer Friedhof gehören. Prominente Bürger wie Julien Schoenaerts, La Esterella, Herman De Coninck, Hendrik Conscience, Peter Benoit und andere fanden hier ihre letzte Ruhestätte.
